The charming sense of Morocco’s seaside town Essaouira has little changed in half a century since Jimi Hendrix, and the Stones rocked up the Medina.  Roof top terraces (with endless sea views and lay-back vibe) and a perfect year round temperature.

There are these days however…
It all starts with the wind coming from the South…a warm wind, no more than a breeze that seems to be o so innocent. Until one suddenly notices the surrounding countryside steaming like a boiling kettle. And in a matter of minutes the fog is rolling in over the Medina!  Smoothly like soft milky raib the main streets and little alleys get saturated.  A mysterious silence gets the port and the old town in its grip.

And in this silence you can hear him…Essaouira’s mistery man, the sailor with the wooden leg!

At first he seems far away, and the faster one walks, the closer he seems to come…Your heart is beating faster for every closed door you pass and you feel the drops of mist on your forehead, or is it sweat?!
Then, the moment of confrontation when your mind has convinced you that you’re running in to him while taking that last corner out of the dark alley …
you scream…
The sun peeps through and…
you realize you’re in Morocco. Where stories are told and magic can happen and you smile.
Time for a coffee at Café de France.

Moroccan storytelling is fascinating and the last real storytellers are old. A cultural heritage that threatens to perish. There are several initiatives trying to engage and learn young Moroccans the noble arts of it. Who wouldn’t like the stories of a 1001 nights to last for ever?

‘Relax’ – the middle name of this town

The best times here are the ones when you know there is nothing more to life then a walk along the beach, a hello to your local merchant and a coffee at the square. The sun is out, the wind is just a little breeze ( but you never know when Mr Strong wind will come back )…the tourists are reduced to the size this town can handle and everything is screaming ‘RELAX’. The perfect moment to have a ‘silent’ walk in the Medina and try to capture the magic with all of your senses…

Notice the talented youngsters that dance and make music in the street – they sure have rhythm!
Smell the fresh baked bread and pastries on every street corner.
Hear the women’s voices in the house while the couscous is being prepared.
Touch the beauty of an old faded door.
Taste the salt in the air.

For every step you take, your heart beat gets more in sync with the waves. Your head gets free of worries, an inner smile shows on your face…
Life is good in Essaouira…

Essaouira is a festival town! Basta! We don’t know exactly when it happened, this ‘vibe’ that came over and invaded this Atlantic surf paradise . And it’s also hard to define. One simply has to come and discover it, feel it, live it.

The ‘layback festival vibe’ we call it, 
and right now it’s Gnaoua all over in every medina wall…! There is just no escaping it. 
When ever we leave the riad there is music in the streets. From the rhythm of the African drum to the soft sexy Jazy sounds in the restaurants at night.

The days are filled with sunshine beach and peace.
The nights with dancing and partying under a million stars.

Essaouira has the vibe and this is for sure going to become even more defined with the new upcoming festival MOGA in October. Bohemian chic and fresh new Moroccan sounds blended with some stunning city backdrops that our small town is loaded with.
